2 cans of cinnamon roll dough (with icing)
4 large apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp work beautifully)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons butter, diced
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg if using. Toss until the apples are well-coated.
Open the cinnamon roll dough and separate it into individual rolls. Flatten each roll using your fingers or a rolling pin, making a disc-like shape.
Take a 9-inch pie dish and layer the flattened cinnamon rolls at the bottom. Press them together to form a crust. Pour the apple mixture over the cinnamon roll crust and dot with diced butter. Sprinkle nuts if desired.
Flatten the remaining cinnamon rolls as before and place them over the apple filling, creating a topping.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
