  • 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 1 cup of warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup of butter (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons of red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • ½ cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar (for frosting)

  • Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk (about 110°F) and sugar to activate the yeast. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Add eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and red food coloring to the yeast mixture. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down gently. Roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle evenly with brown sugar, cinnamon, and any other desired spices. Starting from one end, roll the rectangle into a tight log.
  • Using a sharp knife or pastry cutter, slice the log into 12 equal pieces. Arrange these slices in a greased baking dish and let them rise again for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the scrolls for 25-30 minutes until they are golden and fully cooked.
  • While the scrolls are baking, prepare the frosting by mixing powdered sugar with a splash of milk until smooth. Drizzle over the warm scrolls as soon as they come out of the oven.
