Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (for caramel)

  • Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the egg yolk and cold water until the dough forms. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  • In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well coated, ensuring a delightful flavor infusion.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the granulated sugar, stirring constantly until it turns a beautiful amber color. Immediately add the butter, allowing it to melt before slowly whisking in the heavy cream. Stir in sea salt and allow it to cool slightly.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the refrigerated dough and press it into a greased baking pan. Layer the apple filling on top, followed by drizzling half of the salted caramel over the apples. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  • Once baked, allow the bars to cool. Drizzle with the remaining salted caramel and sprinkle with additional sea salt for a gourmet finish.
